SILVANO CRESPI

2018 - Criticism of the prof. Paolo Levi - 1st choice

SILVANO CRESPI
The theme of landscape, defined in the Encyclopedia of Diderot and D'Alembert as one of the richest, most pleasant and
fruitful genres of painting, has experienced mixed fortunes: first considered a minor genre, then an indispensable element
as a backdrop for visual narratives of heroism and passion , finally from the nineteenth century onwards it became
an autonomous and experimental genre, therefore above all a poetic expression of a state of mind, of a suspended moment
of meditation and concentration.
Silvano Crespi is a pure landscape architect, and nature is his only source of inspiration. Behind the choice of the subject
and its framing lies a profound intimate charge. The painter, during the years of artistic activity, has experimented with
various techniques starting from ink, tempera and watercolour, to finally find his dimension in oil painting. It is a landscape
vision where man is absent or only an illusion, and where few traces of human presence, a house, a path, an indefinite figure,
appear distant and as if immersed in silent oblivion. The perspective views are extremely calibrated, marking very deep
distances compared to the close-ups; the skies are calm, or just veiled by light clouds.
Exemplary in this regard are the oil on canvas works "Foschia in Val Badia" cm. 45x60, "Western Wind" cm. 40x50 and
"Mediterranean Maquis" cm. 50x70 which I consider, in this regard, expressive masterpieces of fine workmanship.
The first is a composition from 1993, where the clear and still atmosphere of the mountain valley is clearly perceived.
The expanse is interrupted by conifers which underline the gentleness of the hilly slopes while the rocky mountain peaks
stand out in the background, and the gaze is lost ranging between the green of the meadows and the blue of the sky.
Crespi plays on soft tones rendered with rich and material brushstrokes, which suggest a late summer or autumn season,
and on a nuanced brushstroke with a post-impressionist flavour. In the case of "Western Wind" of 2016, the motion of the air
is visually given by the clouds that cross the sky in quick sections and by the hilly vegetation strongly bent by the gusts of wind.
Light takes on a fundamental role in these works, marking the spaces and shadows and restoring a romantic atmosphere
that pervades each of his works, as in "Mediterranean Maquis" also from 2016, where nature appears serene, harmonious
and significantly preserved, in its natural life cycles, from the wounds that man too often inflicts on it.
The works in question present quality of execution and content: therefore, based on current market values, I believe that
the price of the works cannot be less than Euro 2,500.00. From these prices an Artistic Coefficient of 2 is obtained.
